Three nights out east
A short trip to Lassen, mostly for the dark sky, partly to sleep badly in a tent.
I drove out to Lassen because someone on a forum said the sky there was the darkest within a day’s drive, and because I wanted an excuse to leave the house. Both turned out to be true.
Twenty second exposures, wide open, and a lot of standing around in the dark listening to things move in the trees. I got about four hours of sleep across three nights and I’d do it again next month.
What I’d change
Bring a red headlamp. Bring a second battery — the cold ate the first one by midnight, which is why there are eleven usable frames from the second night and not fifty.
The lake was an accident. I pulled over because I needed to stretch, and the water was doing that thing where it stops looking like water.
